Hundreds of flashing images were posted on an epilepsy discussion board, apparently in hopes of inducing seizures.
National pursuit of happiness pays off
Boston Herald - Apr. 1 (News Report) - You can fret about economic indicators if you want to. But Bhutan's bureaucrats are zeroed in on happiness. The Himalayan kingdom measures its progress not in Gross Domestic Product, but in Gross National Happiness. King Jigme Singye Wangchuck invented the concept in 1972 as a measurement of fair and sustainable economic development, promotion of cultural values, environmental conservation and good government.NewsTrust Rating: 3.0 from source rating - Review It
Britain, America and God
ScienceBlogs.com - By Jonah Lehrer - Apr. 1 (Blog Post) - The Economist has compiled a really interesting chart on the ideological differences between the American and British electorates. (I've been kind of obsessed with all things Anglo-American since the start of the John Adams miniseries on HBO.) The article focuses on the large gap between the two publics, but I was actually impressed by how, once you removed God and God-tainted issues (like abortion and homosexuality) from the equation, the two countries were actually rather similar in ways I...NewsTrust Rating: 3.3 from source rating - Review It
Men misperceive sexual interest in women
ScienceBlogs.com - By Jake Young - Apr. 1 (Review) - Farris et al. have a paper coming out in Psychological Science about how men tend to misperceive sexual interest in women. I get the sense that this is a big problem for many women. Any woman who has spent more than 30 seconds in a bar has had at least one random yo-yo hit on them despite what they perceive as clear negative signals. So I am happy that someone is addressing this issue. I do have a couple concerns about this paper, but let's leave those til the end.NewsTrust Rating: 3.3 from source rating - Review It
Encephalon Goes to Paris (Hilton)
ScienceBlogs.com - By Shelly Batts, Styeve Higgins - Apr. 1 (Review) - Welcome to the most recent installation of the neuroscience blog carnival, Encephelon, here at Of Two Minds! Steve and I thought we would mix things up a little bit and let a guest blogger summarize the best brain blogging (submitted to us (this week)). That guest is none other that famed socialite Paris Hilton, who wished to take this opportunity to attempt to change her image from fashionista to neuronista. Please welcome Paris!NewsTrust Rating: 3.3 from source rating - Review It
Happiness can be inherited, research finds
Canada.com - By Michael Kahn, Maggie Fox, Mary Gabriel - Apr. 1 (Review) - You can't buy happiness but it looks like you can at least inherit it, British and Australian researchers said on Thursday. A study of nearly 1,000 pairs of identical and non-identical twins found genes control half the personality traits that make people happy while factors such as relationships, health and careers are responsible for the rest of our well-being.NewsTrust Rating: 3.3 from source rating - Review It
Change Blindness
New York Times - By Natalie Angier - Apr. 1 (Review) - Leave it to a vision researcher to make you feel like Mr. Magoo. When Jeremy Wolfe of Harvard Medical School, speaking last week at a symposium devoted to the crossover theme of Art and Neuroscience, wanted to illustrate how the brain sees the world and how often it fumbles the job, he naturally turned to a great work of art. He flashed a slide of Ellsworth Kelly's "Study for Colors for a Large Wall" on the screen, and the audience couldn't help but perk to attention...NewsTrust Rating: 3.7 from source rating - Review It
